Hey Girl, Are you S.A.D.? Ten ways to uplift your mood.

Standard

Sad? Blame it on the weather! Yes it is that time of the year when the sunny summer is gradually giving way to autumn. Less sun, shorter days and a nip in the air may dull your spirits. That is what is called the Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) Though it may really be severe in some people, most of us just feel the listlessness because of less sun.Of course for us women it may also be because it is that time of the month! But do not let your spirits down. There is a way to get over it. So here are some of my fool proof ways to get over the seasonal blues.

1) Go out in the sun.

Put your sunblock on and step out in the sun. Strangely the indoors become extremely dreary at this time of the year.Take it as a nice opportunity to flaunt those designer shades. Not to mention the Vitamin D you get from venturing out .

2) Do some form of exercise.

Be it a walk in the park, swimming or a nice run around the block. Any form of exercise will make you feel better especially if it is an outdoor activity.Exercise releases the happy hormones called the endorphins which elevate your mood.

Yoga is also a great mood elevator. Try doing laughter yoga with friends. Laughter is so infectious that you will laugh your blues away.

3) Eat right, Eat often.

Chocolate, carbs, bananas, tea, spinach and leafy greens, walnuts, oily fish like salmon and fruits all help in relieving stress and help in alleviating depression.

Make sure you are not consuming processed carbs like pizzas, burgers etc. These cause the blood sugar levels to plummet thus causing cravings.

Have 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones.

Add to it lots of water and you are good to go.

All these foods maintain your blood sugar levels and keep you happy ,not to mention the added advantage of helping maintain your weight!

4) Wear color.

Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions. – Pablo Picasso
Colors are known to have a great effect on mood. There is a separate branch known as Color Psychology.

Wear Blue for relaxation.Red for romance and Purple for creativity.

So now go girl you have another reason to wear what you want .

5) Wear Red nail paint.

I personally love red nail paint. If your workplace is conservative, at least paint your toe nails red if not your fingers.

6) Get a blow dry.

For me that is the ultimate mood lifter. The lure of a good blow dry is hard to miss. With coiffed hair not much goes into getting ready and you definitely need less makeup.

7) Stay around happy people.

Need I say more?

8) Indulge in some Retail Therapy. (Emotional Shopping)

Hit the stores and the malls with your favorite gal pals….go shopping! But in moderation. You go overboard and you swing right back into depression.

9) Hear good music.

Music is uplifting. For instance I love all Maroon 5 tracks.

10) Watch a funny movie.

The whole exercise of getting ready and going to the movies with your friends is awesome. You get out, you dress up and you see people around having a good time. All this is pretty infectious and makes you come out of the dumps.

That was my list of things I do to make myself happy. What about you gorgeous people out there? I invite more suggestions so that we can have a separate post with all of your ideas and names featuring there. BUCK UP.

Waiting for your inputs.

Be happy always.

Quick Fashion Fixes

Standard

Now that is such a necessity! Today, after work and after scrubbing my face off all the layers of makeup , as I was looking forward to my laid back evening, my son came up with an idea of walking down to the nearest Subway for dinner. One look at my disheveled hair and a tired drawn face ,I developed cold feet. But no ,I had to go along with him. Thankfully I have a list of quick fashion fixes that I am going to share with you all.

MORNING FIXES

A hurried morning is so common especially with us working mothers. Top that with an insane passion to look your best and there arises the need of these simple fashion fixes.

  1. Keep a dry shampoo on your dressing table always.
  2. A good face wash with a scrub that can be routinely used and should rest in bathroom cabinet.
  3. You can skip the foundation if in a hurry and use just a quality compact powder to even out your skin tone.
  4. Applying eye liner is time consuming so just go ahead with a nice kajal on inside of the lower lid to counter your dark circles.
  5. Apply a lip gloss.
  6. Tie a pony or a top knot if you don’t have time to style your hair.
  7. Skip the earrings and just accessorize with a nice watch, a slip on cuff . I also have a slip on silver necklace always ready in my drawer which I put on in a jiffy. You can have golden accessories also but I am partial to silver as it is good both for mornings and evenings.
  8. Nude slippers and a nude bag should always be handy . If you have nude ballerinas it even better as then you can hide untidy feet and chipped nail-paint. As for the bag I generally prefer a multicolored bag.

EVENING FIXES

Everything I talked about above holds good for the evening also except for the following.

  1. Apply a bright orange or red lipstick.
  2. The kajal should be darker.
  3. Carry a black  or a silver clutch.

Remember these tips are not for parties and formal dinners.

These are pictures of me and my sisters and daughter on vacation in Goa. Notice my red scarf (from Hong Kong) in the earlier pic and the bright pink bag my daughter is carrying . So pleasing to the eye! I am wearing a peach kaftan in the last picture with multicoloured edges to brighten the outfit.

These small additions are my way of beating the blues.

In this photograph my daughter has nicely teamed a a blue top , neon pink bag with black shorts. Though not a perfect  assembly for the chill this combination can be a winner if a shrug is added to the attire.bohemian floral dress - purple print and tights with soft medium grey boots and dusty plum cardi

And the layering comes back too .Do look my post on” Playing with layers”.

More next time…xo.

Playing with layers…Part1

Standard

Layering creates magic . Putting on layers creates new outfits from old ones, adds style, helps you subdue dark colors and is the new fashion statement. Layering can be either winter layering or you can add layers to your sheer summer outfits. First summer layering i.e. Part 1

1) Layering in summer is about a fitted inner layer and a flowy upper layer. It works something like wearing a chemise underneath a see through top.

2). But now your inner layer does not have to be dull and pathetic. You can spruce up your outfit by having a contrast inner in dark colors, printed inners beneath plain sheer fabrics or longer inners with shorter tops.

3) You can have multiple layers. one can add a nice flowy stole as the topmost layer and the lastly layer it further with a nice neckpiece.

4) Even the lowers can be layered. A sheer pair of leggings going into thigh high boots can also make a fashion statement.

5) Because it is summer bright colors in sheer fabrics(Georgette.chiffon) and even crochet and lace can look good while layering.

6)You can even increase the length of your short dress by wearing a longer dress in a thin fabric in a bright color or same color under your short dress.

BLENDING IN OR STANDING OUT!

Standard

Now that is one hell of a question! And the answer is of course STANDING OUT WHILE BLENDING IN. Yes you got me right. It should never look as if you have tried too hard and still something in your persona should make you look different from others. Though it is obvious that it is ones own personality that shines through, in today’s world we can also take help from clothes, makeup and accessories to bring out the best in you.

Today we talk about the sensible play of color in your attire.

First you should know which color suits you. It is not essential that a particular color suits your friend it will suit you too. So the first the basics…black and white are two colors that are truly beautiful! Black is slimming and can be worn both as an upper or lower, as a result help in adding a slimming effect to broader upper torso or heavy thighs. White on the other hand is royal and classy but should generally be worn with a contrasting darker shade.

Next step is to determine which color suits you.

Assess what you already own. Go through your closet and pick out your favorite kurtas, tops jeans etc. or the pieces that usually get you some compliments. Ask yourself what it is about these outfits that you like so much (or what it is that other people like so much). Take note of the colors of the outfits that get you maximum looks.. It may be these colors that end up looking the best on you.

Ask your family. Family usually knows best. They don’t judge you and give a true opinion. Ask your sister or mother to tell you which color suits you the most. Take them along with you to a clothes store. Try out different outfits and take their opinion.

Ask the mirror. You are your best critic.  The colors that are “your colors” will be the ones that brighten your skin tone and bring out the shine in your hair and light up your eyes.

We have either warm or cool hues of our skin. Broadly putting it yellow skin toned people look best in beiges, browns, orange, rust ,reds and creamy whites. While pink skin toned individuals are the cool hued people who look good in pinks, purple, lilac and milky whites.

Accessorize with color.

Color doesn’t have to be just on the clothing you wear, but you also can accessorize with color. Your purse can be of a bright pop color in an otherwise dull outfit. Similarly a bright scarf, bag  necklace and even your shoes are fun to play with when it comes to color. However, I recommend toning down the color of your shoe if you have a bright outfit on. When in doubt go for nude shoes. They never go wrong. Don’t overdo color. A statement neckpiece in the new neon range instantly spruces up a dull outfit.

Even red lips are a great accessory to flaunt to pep up a dull outfit.

Above are some accessories that can help to glam you up in a subtle way.

Colored bottoms.

Most of us stick to blacks or whites in Indian wear as regards lowers and to denims in western wear. But why restrict. You can multiply your options if you are ready to experiment with colored bottoms. Brighter lowers have to be complemented with tops in sober colors. One cannot wear both separates in bright contrasting colors. That way you can end up looking like a Christmas tree.

Last but not the least weather also dictates some norms on how you dress. Apart from winter, summer, rain there is also the daily changes in weather . A cloudy dreary day or a day filled with sunshine, what the day holds for us when we get up after a dreamy slumber we don’t know.It must have been a common occurrence with many of my working friends and even with the party animals who are always looking out of the window to see the weaather and decide what to wear. So here it is b! The basic mantra to follow so that u can stand out in a crowd whatever the weather, occasion or mood. Bright colours lift your mood when its  cloudy  while wearing whites and pastels is the way to go on hot sunny days

.Follow these simple tips and brace yourself for complements !

So till next time…..lots of love…xoxo!
